Level 5 - Advanced Phonics Patterns From Children's Books
Students work through the Advanced Phonics Patterns book to learn the less common phonics patterns, more suffixes and prefixes, and common ending syllables (tion/nation, cial/special, sure/pressure, etc.) A few of the patterns from Phonetic Words And Stories, Books 1-8, are included as a review. The book has all black print. Students read a set of words and sentences for each new pattern. The words are not illustrated. Instructions for the teacher provide ideas about how to use the pages.
Sound charts at the beginning of the book show all of the new and previous phonetic patterns. These are used to introduce new patterns and review patterns that have been previously taught. Advanced phonogram flashcards are available to review the new patterns.
Studying each new pattern or group of patterns prepares students to read a new trade book. The list of trade books to be read includes eighty-one popular children's picture books, ranging from the first grade through the fourth grade reading levels. Students are ready to read each new book after they have studied the necessary phonics patterns. When a student is ready to read a new book, it will be listed at the top of the phonics page. The earlier books on the list are suitable for first grade students. Students who are currently reading at a higher level should read books at their own level. Trade books must be checked out of the library or purchased separately.
There are several additional sections in this book. They can be used for review, as a preview, or for extra practice. The patterns on these pages are grouped with similar patterns. The sections include syllable study review pages, advanced ending blend pages, advanced ending syllable pages in both easy and regular versions, and advanced consonant patterns, including patterns with silent letters. These sections do not have sentences. The words are printed twice, first as separate syllables, then as the whole word.
