More Letter Sounds
The sounds for the letter patterns on this page come from part two of the sound story. There are not enough single letters to represent all the sounds in the English language. So some of the sounds are represented by two or more letters working together. Click the bars above the letter patterns to hear the sound or sounds it represents. Sometimes a single pattern can have two or more possible sounds. On the other hand, sometimes two different patterns can represent the same sound.
Consonant Digraphs
Two consonants working together to represent a single sound.
In a consonant digraph pattern, the two consonants in the pattern do not represent their usual sounds. Instead, the letters work together to represent just one sound, that is usually completely different from either one of the letter sounds. The tch pattern is called a consonant trigraph because it is made up of three letters.
