Large Picture-Word Pages For Rhyming Short Vowels, Level 3
Background: When the Rhyming Short Vowel Words And Sentences book is open, you see picture pages on the left and word pages on the right. Generally, there are ten new words and ten new pictures on each set of pages. The pictures and words are arranged in a different order. This allows the students to work with the teacher to play the "robot" game. The teacher says the individual sounds for one picture at a time, going out of order, and calls on students to find the matching picture. Then the teacher says the sounds for each word, and calls on students to find the correct word. To find the picture or word, the students have to put the sounds together mentally to find the answer. This exercise is called oral blending. It is a phonemic awareness exercise and helps students become aware of the individual sounds in each word and how the sounds fit together to form the word. Traditional phonemic awareness exercises don't use letters or words. In the robot game, finding words after finding the pictures helps students connect the individual sounds to the left to right sequence of letters in the words. This makes it easier for students to read the words on their own.
Application: These charts match the picture/word pages in the Rhyming Short Vowel Words And Sentences book. The charts are printed on white 11 x 17 inch ledger paper. Using the charts, the teacher can play the robot game with the students even if they don't have a short vowel book. Students can then complete the matching workbook pages. It will work best to place the charts on an easel, with students sitting on a rug or mats close to the easel so that they can see the pages easily. Instructions are included.

These large picture/word pages in this section can be used with any of the three sets of books. Each set has a total of eight teaching units/books. Instructions for using the picture/word pages are included in a separate PDF file; see below. There is another separate file containing the answer keys for all of the Level 3 and Level 4 charts . It is printed in regular letter sized paper, 8 1/2 by 11 inches.
