Picture Dictionary A-Z
The Picture Dictionary A-Z book contains illustrated word lists. In each list, all of the words either begin or end with the same letter sound. The pictures serves as a definition for each word; there are no written definitions. This book is used by students working in the Exploring Sounds In Words book to develop an understanding of beginning and ending sounds in words. Students work with the teacher to identify the words from the pictures; they are not expected to be able to read the words at this level. Students then listen for the beginning or ending sound in each word, taking note of the letter that represents that sound. The book also contain a second list, which is not illustrated, of the three-hundred most common words.
Students who are already reading can use the Picture Dictionary A-Z book as a spelling reference during independent writing activities. The teacher can also study one list at a time with the students as a decoding review.
