Advanced Phonics Patterns From Children's Books
Advanced Phonics Patterns From Children's Books teaches less common consonant patterns, advanced ending syllable patterns, and new prefixes and suffixes. It reviews some of the previous vowel patterns and all of the basic syllable patterns. It also reviews beginning and ending consonant blends and introduces a few less common blends.
An entire set of sound charts is included at the beginning of the book. Students will be able to review all of the previously taught and all of the new phonetic patterns from the charts. You can hear videos that demonstrate the sounds for each of the patterns on the charts under the VIDEO tab on the web site menu at www.soundcityreading.net.
The first part of the book has a sequential format. Each day students read twelve words and a set of sentences with either a new phonetic pattern, advanced ending syllable pattern, or prefix or suffix pattern. After reading studying several new patterns, students will be ready to read a new children's picture book. As they progress through the Advanced Phonics Patterns book, students will be able to read eighty-one books ranging from the first grade reading level through the fourth grade level. For each book that is read, students will be able to decode (sound out) almost every word in the book, since they have already studied all of the phonetic patterns found in the words in the story.
The second part of the book is not sequential. This section provides extra practice reading various types of words. It includes word lists that review all of the basic syllable patterns and lists that provide extra practice reading words with advanced ending syllables (lion/addition, ture/future, sion/mansion, etc.). It also has lists of words with advanced consonant patterns and lists of words with new and review consonant blends.
