Level 4, Book 2, Sound Charts

There are three sets of books that teach phonics patterns at level four.  Use the charts on this page with Book 2 from any of the sets listed below.  Each set teaches the same phonics patterns in the same sequence.  All three sets include the same illustrated, decodable practice stories.  However, each set is printed in a different format.

Phonetic Words And Stories, Books 1-8 - Large, color-coded print, with words and pictures on facing pages
Basic Phonics Patterns, Books 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-6, 7-8 - All black print, words and sentences are illustrated
Know The Phonetic Code, Volumes 1-3 - All black print, words are not illustrated

Book 2 includes review charts and new charts to teach new patterns.  Point out the new patterns, model the sounds, and have students repeat. Continue to practice daily, modeling as needed, until students can say the sounds without help.  Make any explanations as needed. Practice new and review charts daily.

Note - To study the sound charts from level four books three through eight, you can watch videos that show the charts in the Advanced Phonics Patterns book.  It contains all of the advanced charts from level five and also contains all of the charts from level four books one through eight.  Click here to see the videos.

Note: "When two vowels go walking, the first vowel does the talking and the second file does the walking."  I mistakenly said this backwards in the audio file for the chart shown above.

Chart 11
Syllable Study
Closed-Closed

Download this audio file.
In a closed syllable, a single vowel is followed by one or more consonants.  The vowel usually represents its short vowel sound.

In many multi-syllable words, some syllables are not pronounced as forcefully as the others.  We call these unaccented syllables.  In unaccented syllables, the vowel is not pronounced as expected.  It is hardly pronounced at all.  On these charts, when you see a curved arrow under a vowel, it tells you to skip the vowel sound,  because the vowel is in an unaccented syllable.

Chart 12
Silent E Syllables

Download this audio file.
Silent E syllables sometimes come at the end of a multi-syllable word.  Pronounce the consonant sounds.  Do not pronounce the letter e.  It is "silent."  It has to be there, because all syllables must contain at least one vowel.
