Who Should Use This Book?
This book is designed to provide phonological awareness and phonemic awareness instruction to students of any age who need it. It can be used with students who have not yet been taught these skills, and it can be used for extra practice with students who have received initial instruction in this area but need more time to master it. You can use it with the following types of students..
What Is Phonological Awareness? What Is Phonemic Awareness?
Phonological awareness is the understanding of sound units related to words. These units include whole words, parts of words, and the individual sounds in words. Students develop phonological awareness through guided oral exercises with the teacher that involve listening and speech.
Phonological awareness instruction is not the same as phonics instruction. It does not involve working with written words, letters, or letter patterns.
Phonemic awareness is a specific type of phonological awareness. It focuses on the smallest sound units in words, which are called phonemes.

What Skills Are Taught In The Phonemic Awareness Picture Pages Book?
- Syllable Awareness
- Rhyming
- Beginning, Middle, And Ending Sounds In Words
- Oral Blending
- Segmenting
- Print Awareness Lessons (From the Learning The Alphabet books.)
- Language Overview (Brief history of written language)
- Awareness of spoken syllables
- Awareness of rhyming words
In the Sound City Reading program, the phonemic awareness exercises are done in a slightly different way. Although students do not see letters or words during the activity, pictures are used as a visual reference during the lessons. The pictures help students understand the meaning of the spoken words that are created by putting single sounds together. The pictures also provide a way for students to record their answers.
The two phonemic awareness exercises taught in this book are oral blending and segmenting.
- Oral Blending - The teacher pronounces separate sounds, one sound at a time, for a series of words. Students listen, put the sounds together mentally, say the word, and find the related picture.
- Segmenting - Students hear a spoken word and must break the word apart into its individual sounds, saying each sound one at a time.
