More Letter Sounds - From Part 2 Of The Sound Story
The sounds for the letter patterns on this page come from part two of the sound story. There are not enough single letters to represent all the sounds in the English language. So some of the sounds are represented by two or more letters working together. Click the bars above each letter pattern to hear the sound or sounds it represents. Sometimes a single pattern can have two or more possible sounds. On the other hand, sometimes two different patterns can represent the same sound.
Consonant Digraphs
Two consonants working together to represent a single sound
In a consonant digraph pattern, the two consonants in the pattern do not represent their usual sounds. Instead, the letters work together to represent just one sound, that is usually completely different from either one of the letter sounds. These patterns and sounds are taught in part two of the sound story.

Vowel Pairs
These vowel pairs are called diphthongs. You change the position of your mouth as you pronounce the sounds. The patterns oi and oy both represent the same sound. The ou and ow patterns both represent the same sound, but they can also represent other sounds. Words with these patterns are taught in Level 4, Book 4.
Notice that the letters y and w are sometimes used as the second vowel in vowel pairs.
