Alphabet Flashcards
Use these alphabet flashcards to teach and review the letter sounds. At level one, students will learn only one sound for each alphabet letter. As they move from one level to the next, they will that some letters can represent more than one sound in words. You will continue to use the alphabet cards all the way through level five.
"Beyond The Alphabet Flashcards"
These cards show the letters and letter patterns that are introduced in part two of the sound story. These includes the remaining long vowel sounds (ā/apron, ē/emu, ō/ocean, and ū/uniform), the sounds of the consonant digraphs (sh/ship, ch/chicken, th/thumb, th/this, ng/ring), three extra vowel sounds (ä/all, ö/to, ü/bush), two more vowel sounds that are diphthongs (ou/ouch, oi/oil), and a consonant sound without a specific pattern (heard in azure, measure, vision, and garage). They can be used at the end of kindergarten after students have studied short vowel words and sentences at level three. The cards can be used with the sound story to provide a preview of some of the patterns that are taught at level three. This set makes four sets of cards printed in two different fonts. Print them on light purple or light green cardstock.

Sound Picture Cards
These cards show the sound pictures from part one and part two of A Sound Story About Audrey And Brad. They are very useful when you are introducing or reviewing the sound story. Show the new sound picture card after reading a new section of the sound story and have students say the sound. Then go through the cards that have been taught, one at a time. See if the students can give you the correct sound for each card. Model and have students repeat as needed. Next randomly place the picture cards the students have learned in one section of a pocket chart and put the letter cards they have learned in a different section of the pocket chart. Have students match each picture card with the letter that represents that sound by placing them side by side.
Sound Picture Cards With Letters
These cards for part one of the sound story have both the sound pictures and the related letters. Use these with beginners and with very young students who are not yet able to recognize the alphabet letters, even after they have been introduced to them. Print these cards on white letter-sized cardstock. After printing, the pages will be cut in half.

Oral Blending/Segmenting Cards
At levels one and two, there are pages in the student books that are used to practice oral blending and segmenting skills. When teaching these skills, the students can work directly from their books. This set of cards has many of the same pictures, and can be used in the same way.
To do the oral blending exercise, students listen to the teacher say the separate sounds in words, one at a time, with a short pause between each sound. Students listen carefully to the sounds and find the matching picture card. Developing this skill prepares students to read words phonetically.
The same picture cards can be used to develop segmenting skills. The teacher shows each picture, one at a time, and pronounces the word normally. Students look at the picture, listen to the word, and then pronounce each sound in the word separately, pausing briefly between each sound. This exercise prepares students to spell words. This works well if students are given small tokens, such as counters or cubes, to use when doing the activity. They place the tokens in a grid, and move one token at a time as they say each sound. Instructions are included in the books used at level one and level two. (After students have mastered this skill and have learned enough letters of the alphabet, they can begin spelling short vowel words with plastic letters.)
