Information About Level 5 - Advanced Phonics Patterns
This section explains the skills taught in the Level 4 materials. To see the PDF files for these materials, hover over PDF FILES on the main menu and then click on LEVEL 5 - ADVANCED PHONICS PATTERNS PDFS.
General Comments
- After learning all of the common phonics patterns and syllable patterns at level four, students study the less common phonics patterns at level five.
- Students also study advanced ending syllables, which must be learned as a whole, as in tion/addition and ture/nature.
- Students practice reading words with less common beginning and ending consonant blends, while reviewing the beginning and ending blends that have been taught.
- Students practice reading words with many new suffixes and prefixes.
- At level five, students read a new set of words for each pattern, along with a set of sentences. The teacher introduces the words to the students one at a time, pronouncing the word, explaining its meaning, and pointing out any parts in the word that are not intuitively clear. The words are marked to help students analyze the vowel patterns in each syllable and overall structure of the words. Then students practice reading the words and sentences.
- At level five, the Know The Phonetic Code books can be used to review previous phonics patterns. Some older books are available that cover both level four and level five patterns in the same book. See the PDF files available at level five.
- As they work through the advanced level, students will be able to read eighty-one children's picture books, from the first through fourth grade level, available from the library or bookstores. The books are integrated into the instructional sequence. Each new book is introduced when students have learned enough patterns to read the entire book phonetically. The books are arranged in a specific order so that all of the words in them will be decodable, using only the phonetic patterns that students have learned.

Students work through the Advanced Phonics Patterns book to learn the less common phonics patterns, more suffixes and prefixes, and common ending syllables (tion/nation, cial/special, sure/pressure, etc.) A few of the patterns from Phonetic Words And Stories, Books 1-8, are included as a review. The book has all black print. Students read a set of words and sentences for each new pattern. The words are not illustrated. Instructions for the teacher are provided explaining how to teach the daily lessons.
There are several additional sections in this book. The pages can be used for for extra practice and review. The patterns on these pages are grouped with similar patterns. The sections include syllable study pages, pages with new and review ending consonant blends, advanced ending syllable pages, and advanced consonant patterns. These sections do not have sentences. The words in the lists are printed twice, first as separate syllables, then as the whole word.
Sound charts at the beginning of the book show all of the new and review phonetic patterns.
Advanced phonogram flashcards are available to review the new patterns.
Students continue to use the phonics patterns charts from level four. A new set of charts is available which shows the advanced ending syllables. These charts are included in the student books and are also available as large wall charts.
Studying new phonetic patterns prepares students to read new trade books. The list of books to be read includes eighty-one popular children's picture books, ranging from the first grade through the fourth grade reading levels. Students are ready to read each new book after they have studied the necessary phonics patterns. When they are ready to read a new book, it will be listed at the top of the phonics page. The books are also listed in the table of contents, showing when they can be read. The earlier books on the list are suitable for first grade students. Students who are currently reading at a higher level should read books at their own level. Trade books must be obtained separately, either checked out of the library or purchased.
Who Should Use Level Five?
Students of any age who have completed level four will be ready to begin level five. Typically this will be sometime within the second half of the school year in first grade or at the beginning of second grade.
What Books Are Used At Level Five?

From Children's Books This book teaches many new patterns.
It also reviews a few of the consonant and vowel patterns from level four.
It also includes the following pages.

Older Books That Contain Both Basic And Advanced Phonics Patterns
The Vowel Patterns and Consonant Patterns books are from the previous web site. Students practice reading phonetic word lists and sentences for each of the consonant and vowel patterns. These books are not sequential. The phonics patterns in both books are arranged in alphabetical order, to make it easy to find the pattern you are looking for. They do not start with the easiest patterns and progress to more challenging patterns, like the newer phonics patterns books. The lists include both basic and advanced patterns. The words and sentences are not illustrated, and they are printed in all black print. The pattern to study is shown at the top of the page along with a key word and picture. In each book, students read rhyming word lists first, wherever possible, then a mixed list (all with the same pattern, but not arranged in rhyming lists), followed by a group of sentences.
Advanced Decoding Practice, January 2014
This older book includes word lists to teach/review phonics patterns and syllable patterns from Level 4 - Phonics Patterns, and Level 5 - Advanced Phonics Patterns. I still really like this book. It includes an older version of the sound charts. It would be a good book to use for students who need to review levels they have studied. It could also be used for initial instruction when teaching the patterns. Click on the green bar to open the file. Scroll down to see sample pages from this book. Click any page to enlarge it.

Flashcards
At level five, students will continue to use the alphabet flashcards and phonics pattern flashcards that were used at previous levels. They will also use the advanced phonics patterns cards to learn and review the phonics patterns and advanced ending syllable patterns taught at level five.
Why do the students still review the alphabet cards at level five? It is because they learn new, alternate sounds for some of the letters. They also discover that some letters do not represent any sound at all in certain words. So students respond to the alphabet cards at level five in a more advanced way.

The Treasure Chest Game
Students play the treasure chest game at level five to review the advanced phonics patterns and advanced ending syllables that they have learned. Students take turns selecting gold coins that show the phonics and syllable patterns. If a student can say the correct sound or sounds for the pattern, he or she can place it on their treasure chest. The student with the most gold coins in his or her treasure chest at the end of the game is the winner.
There are six sets of coins included in this game. Each set practices a different group of patterns. Start with set one after students have learned the first group of patterns. Continue with the remaining sets as soon as students have learned the patterns needed to play them, going in order from set one through set six.
