Manuscript Handwriting

Preparatory Level

Handwriting books at the preparatory level are easier than those at the elementary level.  Students trace large and small letters or letter outlines to learn to write the letters.  Learning to write the letters helps students recognize and remember the letters when they see them.

This is the newest version of the preparatory level handwriting book.  It has been expanded to include  handwriting readiness picture pages and letter review pages.  The large letter introduction pages have been redesigned with thinner letter outlines.  This allows both finger tracing and tracing with a pencil on the large letters. This handwriting book will work well with young students who are just beginning to learn to write letters.  It could also be used with older students who need to improve their letter formation.
Manuscript Handwriting Tracing Pages

The pages in Manuscript Handwriting For Beginners are just the handwriting pages from Learning The Alphabet, Books 1 And 2.

The Learning The Alphabet Letter Tracing Book is an even easier version of the handwriting pages in Learning The Alphabet.
Learning The Alphabet Letter Tracing Book

This book includes just the handwriting pages from Exploring Sounds In Words, Books 1 And 2.  The pages provide an easy introduction to manuscript handwriting.
Exploring Sounds In Words Handwriting

Elementary Level

The handwriting books at the elementary level are more challenging than those at the preparatory level.  Using three- panel pages with large letter patterns, students trace the new letter, copy it, and then write it from memory.  Students then trace and copy smaller letters.

The Manuscript Handwriting On Ledger Paper book has very large letters to trace and copy.  This is the best size for introducing letters to students who need extra help.

The Manuscript Handwriting On Legal Paper book has large and small letters to trace and copy.  It  has a few words and a sentence to trace and copy for each letter that is introduced. It includes handwriting warm-up pages.  Students trace various shapes to build pencil skills.

The Manuscript Handwriting On Letter Sized Paper book has medium and small letters, words, and sentences to trace and copy.

The Expanded Manuscript Handwriting On Letter Sized Paper book has the same pages as the regular book, with the addition of two types of pages with larger letters.  The added pages can be used to introduce new letters to first grade students and to provide a firm foundation for older students who need extra help to improve their handwriting.

Books For Each Teaching Level

1.

Learning The Alphabet

These are the REVISED Learning The Alphabet books.  A separate teaching guide for these books will be posted in the near future.
The changes in the books are as follows.
  1. The front and back cover pages are printed in color.  The rest of the book has all black print, as before.
  2. The handwriting pages with the large letters have been changed.  The letter outlines are narrower.  This allows students to finger trace the letters first and then trace them with a pencil.
  3. An additional handwriting page has been added to each letter section.  It is a letter review page.  Students trace letter outlines for all of the letters that have been taught so far.
  4. The order of the oral blending pages has been modified.  In Book 1, students complete three compound word pages, four two-syllable word pages, and six two-sound pages.  In Book 2, students complete two two-sound pages and eleven three-sound pages.  The purpose for this change is so that there will be a gradual increase in difficulty spread across both books as students complete the pages.  Both books include six pages of two-syllable words at the end of the book as extra practice, to be used as needed.
  5. Due to the addition of the extra handwriting pages, the teaching guide will become a separate book.  However, brief instructions are included on each student page in Books 1 and 2.  Please use the teaching guide in the original Learning The Alphabet 1 until I get the separate guide posted.

Short Vowels

This book introduces short vowel words in rhyming lists.  Students should finish the Exploring Sound In Words book and learn to write all the letters of the alphabet before beginning this book and workbook.  Students start with short a words, then study short o words, short i words, short u words, and short e words.  This book is relatively easy because all of the word lists for each short vowel are grouped together.
Note: This is the newest version of Rhyming Short Vowel Words And Sentences, loaded on Nov. 21, 2017.

Rhyming Short Vowel Workbook

This book and workbook may be done while students are learning or reviewing how to write the letters of the alphabet.  The word lists include only the letters that students have been taught to write.  This allows students to complete a thorough study of short vowel words at the beginning of first grade in a shorter period of time.  The word lists are more challenging because the words are not necessarily rhyming within each list.  The lists for each short vowel are spread out throughout the book, to allow for the addition of new letters as they are introduced in handwriting.

Note: This is the newest version of Mixed Short Vowel Words And Sentences, Revised, loaded on Sept. 17, 2017.

This book and workbook will work well with students who have already been introduced to short vowel words.  They provide a quick review in the same format as the books listed above.  Only two sets of words are taught for each short vowel, along with sentence pages.

These books provide extra practice reading short vowel words.  They each present words in both rhyming and body-coda (same beginning sounds) word lists.  The words in the color-coded book are not illustrated, and there are no sentences.  There are both words and sentences in the Basic Short Vowels book, which has all black print. In this book all of the words and sentences are illustrated.

Phonics Patterns Workbooks

The following workbooks may be used with any of the Phonetic Words And Stories, Basic Phonics Patterns, or Know The Phonetic Code books listed above.  On one page, students draw a line between phonetic words and the matching pictures.  On the next page, students copy each word under the matching picture.  The phonetic patterns practiced in the workbooks are in the same sequence in which they are taught in the books.

Color-Coded Phonetic Lists

This book covers the same phonics patterns in the same sequence as Phonetic Words And Stories, Books 1 - 8.  Each vowel sound is printed in a specific color, which makes the vowel patterns stand out in the words.  Students read both rhyming and body-coda (same beginning sounds) word lists.  The words are not illustrated, and there are no sentences or stories.  By reading the word lists, students improve their ability to decode words.
