Skill Sequence

This page shows the sequence charts for all of the Sound City Reading levels.  Scroll down to see all of the charts.  Click on any chart to enlarge it.  Sequence charts are included in each of the student books.  
Level 1 - Learning The Alphabet
Students start with the two Learning The Alphabet books if they are not able to recognize all of the alphabet letters and give their sounds.  
Level 2 - Exploring Sounds In Words
Students begin the two Exploring Sounds In Words books during the second half of the kindergarten year after completing Level 1.  This level can also be used at the beginning of first grade as needed.     
Level 3 - Short Vowel Words And Sentences
Rhyming Short Vowels Words And Sentences - Use this book if students are learning short vowel words for the first time and you want to use a book with color-coded vowels.  
Basic Short Vowels - Use this book if students are learning short vowel words for the first time and you want to use a book with all black print.  This book could also be used to review short vowel words.  
Mixed Short Vowel Words And Sentences - Use this book with students who are starting first grade.  
Two-Page Short Vowel Words And Sentences - This book provides a quick overview of short vowel words.  
Level 4 - Phonetic Words And Stories
There are three sets of books at Level 4.  Each set teaches the same phonetic patterns and syllable patterns in the same order, along with easy practice stories.  However each set is printed in a different format. 
  • Phonetic Words And Stories - Extra large print with color-coded vowels, pictures and words on facing pages, eight books
  • Basic Phonics Patterns - All black print, each phonetic word is illustrated, includes books 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-6, 7-8
  • Know The Phonetic Code - All black print, words are not illustrated, includes volumes one, two, and three which contain instructional material for books one through eight      
Level 5 - Advanced Phonics Patterns
Students begin the Advanced Phonics Patterns book after they have finished level four.     ​

My goal is for as many people as possible to use this reading program to teach students how to read.  All of the materials you need are available on this site as free PDF files.  The materials are copyrighted, but I give permission to all teachers, parents, tutors, and school systems to download and print any of the PDF files for use with the students they teach.    However, they are not to make a profit from distributing the materials.  If you don't have a printer, using a print shop is allowed.  If preferred, you may work with the PDF files directly from a computer screen, without printing them.  This makes it possible for tutors to teach the program online.  Audio and video files are free to watch and to listen to, and they may be downloaded if desired for use with your  students.  In special cases I may grant written permission to individuals to use the materials in other ways.  You can contact me at [email protected].
