Welcome To The Sound City Reading Website!
If you are interested in phonics materials to teach beginning reading or to help older students become better readers, you have come to the right place. The Sound City Reading materials are designed to help children learn the phonics patterns that are needed to become successful, independent readers. The materials are set up in a sequential fashion, from the readiness level through second grade and up. I hope that you will find them useful.
Information about how to use the materials with students can be found at the end (or sometimes the beginning) of each student book. This incudes a sequence chart showing all of the skills taught and a daily lesson outline. Any books that have pictures and words on opposite pages also have an answer key for all of those pages.
It is not necessary to have the kind of teacher's guide that has new instructions each day. The daily routine is always the same. You simply insert the new phonics pattern or syllable pattern for the day into the daily lesson plan. This allows the students to feel very secure because they know what to do and lessons can proceed quickly. It also provides something new to learn each day, so that students always have a new challenge and don't get bored.
The lessons are set up so that students will experience success. Students study just one new phonics pattern each day. They focus on that pattern as they spell and read at least ten new words with that pattern. This allows them to become very familiar with the pattern so that they can apply it easily when reading and writing. As they work through the daily lessons they will begin reading sentences at level three and short practice stories at level four. When students reach level five, students will be able to read over eighty popular children's books that can be obtained from a library or bookstore. The books are integrated into the instructional sequence. Each new book is introduced when students have learned enough patterns to read the entire book phonetically.

How To Get The Sound City Reading Materials
At one time I had an online store as part of this site. I have taken the retail pages offline. I'm no longer offering physical copies of the Sound City Reading materials to purchase. You will need to download PDF files for the materials you want to use and print them. All materials are copyrighted by Kathryn J. Davis, however I give permission to teacher, tutors, parents, schools, and school systems to print and use the materials for their own students. The materials are not to be sold commercially. See the printing recommendations in the general information links below. You may print them at home or at a copy shop. There is no charge for the PDF files. Look under the main menu tab labeled PDF FILES to find the materials you wish to print. Look under the MATERIALS heading to see a description of the materials at each reading level.
