The Sound City Reading program teaches students to read and spell phonetically. It is carefully structured so that students learn new material in a step by step manner. The materials are carefully sequenced so that students will experience success. The program has materials to teach students who have not yet learned the alphabet up through students who are ready to learn advanced phonics patterns.

Level 1
- Teaches the letters of the alphabet and their sounds.
- Teaches beginning oral blending, a sub-skill that is needed to read words phonetically.
- Teaching beginning segmenting, a sub-skill that is needed to spell words phonetically.
- Develops rhyming awareness.
- Develops pencil skills as students trace or draw typical handwriting strokes that are a part of pictures.
- Develops beginning handwriting skills as students trace large and small letters using correct letter formation.
