However, you can add triangular roofs to any of the wall charts in the PDF files shown below, along with streets and other images to create a "Sound City." There are a variety of wall charts available. Scroll down to see all of the options. The advanced ending syllable charts are new. To see them scroll to the bottom of this page.

Original Wall Charts From About 1992
These are my first wall charts. I did the lettering and drew the pictures by hand.
These are pictures of the first "Sound City" sound charts. Unfortunately, they were taken with an instant print camera in 1992, and they have faded to the point that they are mostly illegible. PDF files for these charts are not available. However, you can present the other charts that are available in the same way, if you wish, by adding triangles for roofs.
These are the first wall charts that I made. I started with a large sheet of blue paper as a background, and put a border around it. I wrote the phonics patterns, pictures, and key words that I was teaching on sheets of white paper by hand, sorting them into logical groups. I arranged them in two rows, one above the other. I added construction paper triangles to the top of each chart so that they would look like houses, creating a "Sound City."
I used black construction paper to make the streets. I used chalk to make a dashed line along the center of each road. I happened to have some green textured vinyl sheets that I cut slightly wider than the roads. I placed the green pieces on the area below the houses first, then put the roads on top of the green strips. This was meant to show grass on either side of the streets.
I continued the city theme by writing the beginning consonant blends and ending consonant blends on construction paper shapes. I drew several large trucks and placed them on the roads. I put the shapes for beginning consonant blends on one truck and ending consonant blends on another truck. I also put up two airplanes pulling banners. I do not recall exactly where all the patterns are placed on these charts. The houses that have white roofs with a black border show the long vowel patterns, with one house for each long vowel sound.

Using Picture Files To Make Your Own Wall Cards And Charts
If you want to make your own wall charts, wall cards, flash cards, and learning games, on the main menu going across the top of the page, click on PICTURE FILES. You'll find the pictures from the sound story, key word pictures from the sound charts, and pictures to illustrate beginning sounds, ending sounds, consonant blends, and many phonetic words.
Small Wall Charts From A Sound Story About Audrey And Brad
Use these charts when working with small groups who will be close to the charts.
These charts are included in the book A Sound Story About Audrey And Brad. They are printed on one side only so that they can be removed from the book and posted on a wall or bulletin board.
The charts in the book are printed on 8 1/2 by 11 inch white paper. They have roofs so that they look like houses. The phonics patterns, words, and pictures on these charts are large enough to be seen if students are sitting close to the charts. Students will not be able to read these charts from the back of the room.

These charts should be printed on white 11" by 17" ledger sized paper. Some assembly is needed, involving trimming the bottom of some pages or cutting and taping some of the pages together when a chart is too large to fit on a single page. Assembly instructions are included.
An alphabet chart is also included. The charts show all of the phonics patterns taught in Level 4.
As students work through the Level 4, some patterns will have multiple sounds. For these patterns, all of the possible sounds are shown on the chart.
In some cases, students learn learn one or two sounds initially and then learn one or more additional sounds for the same pattern in a later book. For example, in Book 2 students learn two sounds for the ea pattern: ea/eat and ea/head. In Book 6, student learn a third sound for this pattern: ea/steak. In these cases, more than one version of the charts are included, so that students are not confused by seeing sounds they have not yet learned. Start with the first chart, and then replace it when students have learned the additional sound or sounds.
Use the phonics patterns charts with any of the following books. Each set of books is printed in a different format, but they all teach the same patterns in the same order.
This set of charts will also be used at Level 5, Advanced Phonics Patterns, for review.

Truck charts are used to practice pronouncing ending consonant blends and beginning consonant blends.
Advanced Wall Charts
At the advanced level, use these Level 5 charts to supplement the charts from Level 4.
At Level 5, you will use the Level 4 charts to review previously taught patterns. You can add the advanced ending syllable wall charts shown below. I am working on a set of Advanced consonant pattern charts. Hopefully I will be adding them soon.
Click on the green bar below to download the PDF file for the advanced ending syllable wall charts. Sample pages from the charts are shown below the bar. The pages are printed on 11 by 17 inch white paper in landscape mode. There are two version of the charts in this file. The first version shows the ending syllables in the order in which they are introduced. The second version shows the ending syllables grouped by types of syllables. You can decide which version you want to use.

Older Versions Of Alphabet Wall Cards That Include Phonics Patterns
I've updated an older version of the wall charts, creating two different versions. The sets include alphabet wall cards to be printed on legal sized paper or card stock. Each card shows a model of the correct letter formation for a letter of the alphabet, along with a sound picture from A Sound Story About Audrey And Brad. The sound picture shows the sound for each letter. In addition to the letters of the alphabet, letters and letter patterns from Part 2 of the sound story are also included. These are the "Beyond The Alphabet" sounds, which include the long vowel and dotted vowel sounds, two vowel diphthong sounds, and five consonant digraph sounds. If a sound picture can be represented by more than one letter or letter pattern, the additional patterns are shown in smaller print at the bottom of the page.
You can listen to the sound story read aloud under the audio tab on the menu. Part 1 of the sound story can also be played as a set of videos under the video tab. You will be able to hear the sound represented by each sound picture and the letters that represent each sound.
- In version one, all of the letters and letter patterns are printed in black print.
- In version two, the vowels are printed in specific colors to indicate specific vowel sounds.

Use the two PDF files shown below to add additional elements to the Alphabet Wall Cards to show consonant digraphs, the oi/oy and ou/ow vowel sounds, r-controlled vowel patterns, and soft c and g sounds,
Print these digraph forest pictures on green card stock to use with the brown tree trunks included in the set described below. Includes consonant digraph patterns and the ack, ang, ank, and adge ending sound patterns on trees.
Print these full color charts on legal sized paper. Large designs show bossy r patterns with pictures to illustrate key words, a sun image to show the ce, ci, cy patterns, and an airplane picture to show the ge, gi, gy patterns. Tree trunks are also included.

Pictures Of Older Alphabet Wall Cards That Include Phonics Patterns
Here are pictures of the older wall cards described above. Click on any picture to enlarge it. These are charts I had on my first grade classroom wall at various times from about 2005 through 2011. Even though I've added newer charts (see above) to match the charts in the newer Sound City Reading books, I still really like these older charts. The PDF files for this wall are shown above.
On the charts below, the patterns that have not yet been introduced have been turned to face the wall.
"Crayon" Wall Charts - Another Older Version Of Wall Charts
Click on the photos of the crayon charts to enlarge them. The picture on the right side of the top row shows a combination of the crayon charts with the original version of the Secret Stories charts (see https://www.thesecretstories.com/ for the newest version of those charts; it's a very good program).
More Older Versions Of Wall Charts
These charts have black and white sound pictures and show the alphabet letters on lines for handwriting reference. Both long and short vowel sounds are included, along with some extra sounds, such as sh, oi, etc. The various vowel patterns are shown on either colored backgrounds or plain white backgrounds. On these charts, lower case letters are shown before the capital letters, because these are the letters most frequently used by the students.

Print this set of charts on legal sized paper. The charts show short, long, and dotted vowel sounds, basic consonants along with advanced consonant patterns, umbrella vowels, odd o patterns, sounds for y, bossy r patterns, and consonant digraph patterns and any advanced ending syllable patterns that have the digraph sounds. The phonics patterns and key words have color-coded vowels. A sound picture is included on each page.
